Chapter Seventeen

Nate

ENTERING ONE OF the yet to be painted guest bedrooms and closing the door behind me, I continued into the attached bathroom, closing that door also. I’m sure Ethan wouldn’t have minded me using the shower in his room, but after our brief conversation and the need to talk some more once downstairs, I needed a bit of distance between us and to not be surrounded by his brain scrambling presence to try to gather my wits.

His arrival today, instead of tomorrow, was a lovely surprise, as if thinking about him had conjured him out of thin air. He’d dressed to impress too, and my eyes hadn’t been able to stop roving over him from head to toe. His charcoal pants had fit him like a glove, and the black V-neck sweater snugly molded to his sexy body, yet still gave me enough of a glimpse of the dark hair at the top of his chest to make my temperature rise.

His dark brown hair had me itching to push my fingers through the shiny thickness. When my gaze met those all-too-knowing chocolate eyes, the heat simmering in them I’d been missing all week, I’d had to use all my self-control to not throw himself at him.

I took a stuttering gulp of air. Even behind two doors and a whole set of floors, he still had the ability to throw me off balance. How were we meant to have any meaningful conversation when all I wanted to do was climb all over him?

I needed help. Fast.

Pulling my cell phone out of my overalls pocket, I dialed the one person who would beat some sense into me.

Ben answered on the second ring. “Hey buddy.” Just hearing his voice immediately relieved some of the tension pulling at my shoulders.

I plonked myself down on the closed toilet seat. “Hi,” I whispered, trying to keep my voice down.

He picked up on my tone, as he instantly went into protective friend mode. “Are you okay? What’s going on? Why are you whispering?”

“Sorry.”

“Don’t be sorry, just tell me what’s up.”

I thought over his arrival earlier, when I’d seen Ethan standing at the entrance to the bedroom and how my body had instantly reacted to him being there and how more importantly, so had my heart.

“It’s about Ethan.”

“What about him? Don’t tell me he’s being an ass, or I’ll damn well kick him in it.” Ben abruptly stopped talking, and silence filled the space for a few seconds. “Ah,” he said in sudden understanding. Then more softly, “You fell for him, huh?”

I let out a big huff of air. “Yeah.”

“And what about him? Does he feel the same?”

Did he? Okay, he liked me, and I assumed the conversation we were going to have would be to discuss our arrangement going forward; well, I hoped so anyway. But whether he liked me as much as I liked him, I wasn’t sure.

“He wants to talk to about it.”

“And what do you want?”

What did I want? Him. I wanted him.

“I want to see where this thing between us goes.
